Following a period of financial uncertainty, Swedwatch has signed a new three-year agreement with Sida. The programme funding of nearly SEK 28 million will enable the organisation to continue its important work, with a focus on strengthening civil society’s ability to hold companies accountable for their impacts on human rights and the environment in developing countries.
The new agreement runs from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2029 and provides a total of nearly SEK 28 million in funding.
The announcement follows a challenging period for Swedwatch. In December 2025, Sida announced that it would end the organisation’s core funding early. The short phase-out period left little time to secure alternative funding, putting a large part of Swedwatch’s operations at risk.
“This is fantastic news for Swedwatch. Above all, we are very pleased that Sida recognises the value of our work. At a time when civic space is shrinking and people defending their rights are coming under increasing pressure, independent organisations such as Swedwatch are needed more than ever,” says Karin Hallgren Sanderson, Acting Executive Director of Swedwatch.
