Ethics too expensive for coffee companies
Swedish coffee companies have not contributed to the improvements in the coffee production chain that have taken place in Brazil since 2005.
In 2005 Swedwatch uncovered that the main part of the coffee imported to Sweden originates from Brazilian regions characterized by unacceptable working conditions in the coffee production chain. The following report shows that the biggest coffee roasters in Sweden, Kraft Foods (Gevalia) and Nestlé (Zoégas), have not contributed to the improvements that have taken place in Brazil since 2005. These developments instead derive from stricter legislation and improved state-led monitoring, which have reduced the amount of child labour and forced labour, as well as the situation of migrant workers.
